“Putty Buddy” wins People’s Choice award for ingenuity & innovation

Anchorage, Alaska – CCI Industrial’s Corrosion Under Insulation (CUI) refurbishment team was recently awarded three recognitions for continuous improvement (CI) for work on the North Slope by a major North Slope operator. The CI program recognizes the efforts, creativity, and dedication of contractors as they look for ways to make improvements in safety, efficiency, and overall work performance. A panel of judges reviews projects submitted for six categories: Risk Reduction – Process Safety, Risk Reduction – Personal Safety, Cost Reduction, Best Use of Another CI, Best Overall Improvement, as well as the People’s Choice Award.
CCI’s CUI team won the People’s Choice Award for developing a tool, called the “Putty Buddy”, made out of empty plastic applicator tubes that helps to seal sheet metal seams while reinsulating pipe. The Putty Buddy saves the crew time in the putty application process relative to tools that are available on the market. Because the putty buddy uses discarded materials, this innovative solution also minimizes waste and cost.
The CUI team also received Honorable Mention for two other entries – the Rope Winch and the Buffing/Hot Work Open Flame. The Rope Winch assists with the transport of heavy materials to pipe racks, thereby saving time and decreasing personal injury risk. The Buffing/Hot Work Open Flame reduces costs by finding a better solution to manage the risks associated with sparking material on live equipment, while also reducing permitting requirements to save time.
